On your mark! Get set! READ!!
February 1st marks the start of the annual Reading Marathon fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Ridgewood Library. During the month of February children are encouraged to read at home and at school and record their reading on the form provided. Forms will be sent home with your children on Tuesday January 31st. Please return completed forms with your optional contribution to your teacher by Friday, March 2nd.
Although donations are optional, they are greatly needed and appreciated. The Ridgewood Library’s budget was cut by close to $40,000 for the second year in a row, which resulted in unparalleled library closings. In the month of July alone there were 2,000 fewer children and youth books checked out of the library due to these closings.
The Reading Marathon is an important fund raiser for the library. The funds raised will enrich the Children’s and Young Adults Departments with exceptional programming and quality materials. Any amount of money your child can raise by getting family, friends, or neighbors, to sponsor them will be a huge help to our library.
We have some exciting prizes for your children in order to reward them for their efforts. A Ben and Jerry’s coupon will be awarded to all participants who hand in their forms by March 2nd. Classes that have 100% participation will be given a free ice cream party at Ben and Jerry’s and have their picture proudly displayed in the Ridgewood Library. Children who read at least 12 books or 500 pages will receive a gold Medal. Thank you in advance for your participation in our reading marathon!

Our days at Somerville are filled with many wonderful moments but there is nothing better than when you have the opportunity to recognize a teacher and her students for the hardworking, caring group that they are each and every day! Today, I received a phone call from Rutgers University that Ms. Sarnella and all of the students in 1S have been selected to be honored during the Rutgers vs. DePaul Basketball Game on January 25th at 7:00 PM. This game will be held at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and the students will be honored with the mascot and cheerleaders at some point during the first half of the game!
This recognition is part of a new program co-sponsored by Rutgers and Johnson & Johnson called A Knight in Shining Armor. This award is intended to honor children who have shown substantial courage, commitment and/or compassion by selflessly helping others in their community. The behavior of these students over the past few months has shown them to be true friends to one another and resilient students. I am so proud of them!
Please read the attached letter from Dr. Fishbein.
